Washington Capitals vs Montreal Canadiens predictions

Face-off: 1900 ET, 24/11/2021

Venue: Capital One Arena

Washington suffered a surprise setback when thumped by Seattle but are taken to prove that was just a temporary blip by seeing off Montreal.

The Caps had won six of their previous seven games to put pressure on Eastern Metropolitan leaders Carolina and are the top scorers in that division.

Their opponents here have the worst defensive record in the NHL, so 2.50 for a home win and over 5.5 goals starts off our Washington Capitals vs Montreal Canadiens predictions.

Washington Capitals Odds

Washington’s 5-2 loss to the expansion Kraken felt like the culmination of excessive travelling and some unfortunate injury issues.

TJ Oshie and Conor Sheary joined the list of absentees and an 11-day stretch of seven matches in as many cities finally told on the Capitals.

Even so, Peter Laviolette’s makeshift side enjoyed some strong spells but were left to rue a middle-period blitz of goals from Seattle.

“There was a stretch in the second period that didn’t go our way and then from there, we’re chasing the game,” admitted Laviolette.

“In the third period, I thought we could have won the game. We had enough chances to definitely put up six or seven goals and their goalie made some big saves.”

Getting back home should help Washington to regroup, having won their last two games at Capital One Arena versus Pittsburgh and Buffalo by a combined score of 11-4.

Looking at the NHL odds for this contest, we like 1.91 for John Carlson to provide over 0.5 assists.

The 31-year-old former first-round draft pick had registered seven in four games before drawing a blank in Seattle.

Montreal Canadiens Odds

Montreal emerged from a slump in form in fine style when posting a 6-3 triumph over Nashville, with Ryan Poehling hitting a double in a four-goal second period.

Tyler Toffoli had a goal and two assists as the Canadiens enjoyed a welcome boost, despite Matt Duchene’s hat-trick for the Predators.

Head coach Dominique Ducharme said: “We were a lot sharper mentally and it showed in the way we executed.”

However, Montreal may just be flattered by that scoreline as Juuse Saros allowed five goals on 19 shots before being replaced.

Several key moments went the Habs’ way and an empty-net strike at 18:30 in the third ended Nashville’s late rally.

To be fair, though, the Canadiens have now scored at least twice in eight of their last nine fixtures, even if winning only two of those games.

Let’s finish off our NHL predictions on this contest by taking 4.75 for the Capitals to win by exactly three goals and 14.5 for a 5-2 scoreline.
