Cristiano Ronaldo transfer news: PSG swap deal mooted

We’re tracking the latest Cristiano Ronaldo transfer news and rumours to see whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could be on the move this summer.

The 36-year-old was the Golden Boot winner at Euro 2020 with five goals despite Portugal bowing out at the last-16 stage in their title defence.

Ronaldo was also the leading scorer in Italy’s top flight last season when bagging 29 Serie A goals for Juventus, for whom Massimiliano Allegri has returned for a second spell as manager.

Here are the clubs being tipped to court the Portugal legend and the latest Cristiano Ronaldo transfer odds on him changing teams before September 3, with loan deals included:

MAN UTD @ 7/4

The Portuguese has been linked to a return to Old Trafford since leaving the Premier League club in 2009 and even more so since departing Real Madrid in 2018. The Red Devils are in need of a striker but with Edinson Cavani already on the books, do they need an ageing forward on big money? Another plus for United’s fans is he played alongside boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who will need a trophy to alleviate pressure on himself and Ronaldo could instil a winning mentality at the club.

PSG @ 5/2

Rumours of a potential swap deal with Mauro Icardi emerged at the time of writing, which would instantly put Paris St Germain in the hot-seat for a maiden Champions League trophy. The French side will want to bounce back after losing the title to Lille last season and have made a statement in the transfer market by signing Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi. Adding Ronaldo alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe would strike fear in any defence and he would almost certainly add to his trophy collection.

A return to his spiritual home looks way off the mark due to the Spanish club’s financial struggles but president Florentino Perez would do anything to get their former talisman back at the club. Ronaldo broke several records while at Real, including becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer, and flourished under boss Carlo Ancelotti who has since returned to the club himself. With Karim Benzema and midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric still knocking around, Ronaldo would still fancy himself to add to his tally if he made an unlikely return to Spain.

Players tend to get linked to the club where they started their career and Sporting Lisbon have joined the list. It was his performances in Lisbon that saw then-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson take the plunge on the 18-year-old, who has since won five Ballon d’Or crowns and five Champions League titles. Sporting would definitely welcome back Ronaldo with open arms but it is hard to see the 36-year-old going back to his first team.

MAN CITY @ 14/1

Another unlikely scenario is Ronaldo joining United’s biggest rivals Manchester City. He will not want to tarnish his reputation with the Red Devils fans and the intensity of the Premier League could be too much for the 36-year-old now. City are on the hunt for a new striker after Sergio Aguero’s departure but replacing the Argentinian with Ronaldo seems farfetched, particularly for his commanding transfer fee and wage for someone in the twilight of his career.

A lot of high-profile players tend to finish their career in America, where the MLS continues to develop. The likes of David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain have sampled the league before hanging up their boots. Most of the teams play in desirable destinations such as Los Angeles and New York, which appeals to the ageing superstars. However, Ronaldo may feel he can still contribute in one of Europe’s top five divisions and it could be a move that happens in the next few seasons.
